Often times, babies are evaluated and it can be assumed baby is feeding well at the breast based upon weight gain alone. Sometimes the breastfeeding parent is asked about pain while feeding, and if it's if you report no significant pain or physical damage, it's assumed you have a deep latch and baby is feeding well. However, the pediatrician isn't evaluating the parent and often won't diagnose a suspected oral restriction (tongue, lip. or cheek tie) when weight gain is sufficient.
It's also common that pediatricians' process for evaluation of a baby’s ability to suck is done by placing a gloved finger in baby’s mouth to see if they suckle or how hard they might suck. It’s my experience that since babies are born with a “suck reflex,” they are obligated to suck on a finger that automatically triggers the suck reflex. Your nipples don’t have the same length or feeling and with potential factors such as short nipples, oral restrictions, engorgement (to mention only a few), the baby’s ability to suck on a finger can be misleading. Lactation consultants are trained to evaluate all aspects of tongue mobilization, factors that might affect feeding above and beyond simply assessing a baby’s ability to suck on a finger.
Your baby should always stay up to date with pediatrician visits, but when it comes to infant feeding, lactation consultants are the experts. We take into consideration the “whole picture,” meaning we aren’t only looking at any symptoms the baby might have, we are also evaluating and assessing the parent to insure there aren’t other underlying problems that can affect feeding or weight gain.
Our brains have an inherent motion of expansion and contraction which optimizes the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Any restrictions or damage to this motion can greatly affect our health and wellbeing.
CFT techniques are designed to gently unwind and release accumulated fascial strain. This allows optimal mobility and better brain function. When the Craniosacral Fascial System is loose and open there is free flow of cerebrospinal fluid to help nourish and cleanse toxins.

I was in so much pain while nursing my 2-week old when my friend recommended Alicia to me. I am so grateful she did. Even after our first phone call, Alicia was able to help me more than any internet search. She was kind and extremely knowledgeable. After 2 in-person sessions, my daughter is nursing like a champ! I don’t dread every feeding because of pain — I actually look forward to that time with her! I’m so much more confident and know she’s getting what she needs. If you need help, call Alicia. You will be SO GLAD you did!! ---Jill
I just wanted to let you know how much your advice is helping already! Before each feeding I've been doing the massages. He's been eating so much better & very content after just 20 minutes of nursing. He's napping so much better in between feedings & i noticed he's not so stiff.
Looking forward to our next appointment. Thank you so much! --- Katelynn
